Elementary School | Middle School | Adult Studies | Laura Longman Scholarship
Sunday school classes for elementary age children and middle school students are held in the Fellowship Hall Sunday morning at 10:00 AM, concurrently with our worship service.

"Believe in God, believe also in me." John 14.1
Children come to know the love of God through Jesus and how to live out their belief in God in
their everyday lives. Live B.I.G. is music, art, theater, dance, laughter, sign language, discussion, education, entertainment, sight, sound, cool graphics, hands-on activities, games, and so much more. These classes help kids grow as children of God through hearing, seeing and then living what they learn.

Middle School Age - Grades 5 through 8 participate in the study, "Claim the Life." Each week students are invited into a sacred space and helped to look for God in their lives. They learn how to listen to God and to each other and how to care for each other on their faith journey. Interesting discussions and purposeful activities help them apply what they learn in class to their daily lives.
Adult Study Classes - Series of classes are offered at various times and generally meet during the week. Special classes are held during the liturgical seasons of the church year. Please check the Courier or this page for the most recent information.

Laura Longman Memorial Scholarship
Laura Longman Scholarships are awarded every Easter Sunday in celebration of the life of Laura Lynn Longman (1958 --1984), a young woman raised in the First United Methodist Church of Canoga Park, who loved being a "Valley Girl," loved life on her own and loved learning. She graduated from Taft High School in 1976 and began working while attending L.A. Pierce College.
In early 1979 , Laura was diagnosed with heart failure and eventually received an experimental heart transplant at Stanford University Medical Center. During her recovery she traveled the United States by car and enrolled in San Francisco State University to complete her studies in Biochemistry. She loved science and loved to discuss social issues -- especially when someone's opinion was not hers. Her family and church cared for and supported her through her illness and recovery. Laura died in class while a senior in early 1984 at age twenty-five.
So many people had helped her thrive during and after her heart transplant, and she was so grateful, there seemed to be no adequate way to memorialize such a motivated, vital and energetic life. The Laura Longman Memorial Scholarship was founded as a living memorial and on Easter Sunday, 1985, the first scholarship grants were awarded.
To date, in excess of $83,000 has been awarded in grants.
